michael jackson, or M.J., as he was known in his early years, was a pop icon of the 20th century. In this lecture, we will discuss his life and career and the meaning of his music.
michael jackson’s career was, for a time, as controversial as it was. He was a hugely successful singer-songwriter whose hits were so popular that one of them, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks in a row. But he was never as successful as he was popular, and his career was plagued by personal problems, drug addiction, and a divorce.
In the ’70s, in fact, michael jackson had a tumultuous relationship with his father, and his divorce from his wife, the actress, resulted in both of their children being removed from their homes and placed in foster care. While his career was being managed, he was also struggling with an addiction to illegal drugs. He was hospitalized after overdosing on pills and alcohol in a car accident and was put on suicide watch.
Jackon suffered from depression and was diagnosed with schizophrenia. In the late 70s Jackson’s career was in decline, and drug addiction was beginning to take its toll as well. The drug rehab center where Jackson was working closed down and he took to his bed for a short time, only to be put back on suicide watch again. Jackson was still on drugs and was once again put on suicide watch.
We don’t know exactly when he died, but as the trailer says he was in his late 40s and was found in a hotel room with a knife sticking up from his bed.
The trailer shows us an old Michael Jackson, a man who suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder from his time spent as an incarcerated musician. He was arrested for trying to kill his wife, and the final scene shows him looking up at the sky and saying “I have to go. It’s over.
Maybe the reason he was found in a hotel room with a knife sticking up from his bed, is because he was hiding the syringe in his pocket. The syringe was given to him by a woman named Lisa Jackson. After the woman died, she began to use the syringe on Michael. After he passed away, the syringe was found in his locker at the gym. Apparently after the movie ended Michael found out that Lisa Jackson had committed suicide and began using the syringe again.
Apparently the syringe is just a metaphor for Michael’s “death.” He’s dying. And he has a syringe.
