In general, the only thing that makes it hard to change is a lack of self-awareness. If your habits are so ingrained in your brain that you think every action is intentional, then you’re not going to change your habits. If you’re not even aware of your habits, then you have no control over them and you can’t be sure you’re going to be successful at them.
The biggest thing you can do to help yourself is to learn to self-aware. Learning to acknowledge how your habits have affected the way you live your life is something you can do at your own pace. So many people I’ve talked to who don’t want change say that they’re too afraid to try it, so they try to avoid change, or they avoid their friends.
When you learn to recognize and let go of how you have impacted your life, it gives you the confidence to take action. And if youre willing to take action, you can be successful at it.
For a lot of people who are very self-aware, it’s hard to see the effect a habit has on their life. They may have heard about it, but they’re still living it and they don’t see it anymore. They may have been self-aware, but they didn’t realize the impact they’ve had on their life until they were given a choice to make.
The other reason I don’t think I’m a better person than the others is because I think it’s so hard for me to believe it. I dont think people who are self-aware know theyre better than others. And I think it’s more than just the person who’s a self-aware person, it’s the person that’s a self-aware person.
Thats a good point, and I agree with it. I also dont think people who have had their self-awareness stripped away have any control over their actions. They have no control over their lives, their thoughts, or their feelings. Even if they could consciously control their actions, they couldn’t know what they’re doing was wrong. This is why I think the self-awareness theory is a bit flawed.
Some people would say that being a self-aware person is more a matter of being aware of what youre doing. Thats not the case. Self awareness is a feeling that you have, not a matter of knowing what you are doing. This is why the feeling of being self-aware can also be stripped away. Being able to feel your actions was wrong, couldnt be part of this feeling of self-awareness.
Because being aware of what we are doing feels bad, we tend to avoid it. Being aware of our actions is the opposite. We know we shouldnt be doing it. It feels good.
What youre doing is not self-awareness, its not that. It is being aware that you have been wrong. Knowing that what you are doing is wrong and that you are aware that you are wrong is a very powerful thing.
